You are thinking about becoming a virtual assistant so you can work remotely. Perhaps you are already applying for virtual assistant jobs but all you are hearing is crickets.
Now, you are beginning to wonder if working as a virtual assistant remotely is all just some pipe dream.
NEWSFLASH! It is not a pipe dream and many people have a successful career as a virtual assistant, but it is not a job that just anyone can do.
Here are 5 essential skills that you need to be a successful VA:
Resourcefulness
The dictionary defines ‘resourcefulness’ as being able to deal skillfully and promptly with new situations, difficulties, etc. As a virtual assistant, you may be faced with a variety of situations.
Every client has a unique set of circumstances and it is up to you to be able to figure things out.
What does that mean, you ask? Well, it is important to know how to utilize all your resources. Remember, Google is your best friend.
Even when you may not know the answer, it is important for you to find it without bothering the client.
Work Ethic
Some people hear the term ‘virtual assistant’ and they picture themselves working from home in their pyjamas as the money comes rushing in.
Guess What! It takes a strong work ethic to build a virtual assistant business. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort.
You are your business so it is important that you stand out in the virtual assistant crowd.
Willingness to Learn
There are so many different types of skills that a virtual assistant can learn. You have to not only decide what services you will offer, but you have to determine a rate as well.
Ask yourself, what are your current skills worth? If you don’t have the skills to charge the rates you want, then why would a client hire you?
Answer: They wouldn’t!
You need to take the initiative and determine what are the hottest skills that clients are looking for right now. Do the research, watch the videos, enroll in the courses.
You must constantly stay on top of all the latest skills and software. It is up to you to be a valuable asset.
Desire to Help (Companies and Entrepreneurs)
It is important to understand that your job as a virtual assistant is to help the client or company succeed. You have to realize that it is not about what you want or desire, it is all about the client.
You are taking on the projects that prevent the client from running their business. Whether it is setting up their email campaign, creating their blogs, or running their social media, everything you do helps the client to move forward in their business.
Help the client and the client will help you by providing awesome testimonials to use in your portfolio and referring your name to others in their circle.
Ability to Sell Yourself
Presentation and image are key to having a successful business. As a virtual assistant, it is important to “walk the talk”.
Think about it, if you were the client, would you want to hire someone whose social media was unorganized, their website links didn’t work, and their portfolio was all over the place?
No, of course, you wouldn’t!
In order to obtain the jobs, you need to make sure that your social media presence is on point, your website is professional, and your portfolio is organized and contains samples of your work and testimonials from clients who you have worked for.
Alright, TRUTH TIME! Do you have the essential skills for being a virtual assistant? Do you know what skills are in demand? If you answered NO to any of these questions, then it is time for you to do some research and learn the skills.
